FEAR ITSELF de Matthew Brown sera lancé ce samedi le 4 juin au Cheval Blanc à Montréal. Matthew va venir de Toronto pour participer au lancement. Matthew Brown est un auteur à redécouvrir qui publia des minicomics à Montréal au début des années 90. Ses récits en avance sur son temps sont toujours aussi fort et pertinent qu’à l’époque. Voici quelques paragraphes de l'introduction en anglais que j'ai rédigé pour son livre.
Art is magic, and comics can be used as a positive incantation or a curse. Writing and drawing a story from deep within, carries meaning (like a symbolic dream) and offers insight and wisdom. It is often a truly frank reflection of your own strengths and weaknesses.
The comics I enjoy most are a compendium of observations, questions, realistic human emotions, experimentation, poetry and dreams. All these are present in Fear Itself. And let’s not forget humor! Some of my favorite bits of wisdom come from the Sufis who enjoy laughter a great deal, (as opposed to many Christians.) Can you picture Jesus nailed to the cross and laughing his heart out? Though I am sure that Buddha smiled more often (the Dalai Lama always has a humongous grin on his face).
More than twenty years after the first issue of Fear Itself came out, why publish this collection of comics? Call it “full circle”. Matthew’s stories and art haven’t aged a bit, they are timeless and universal because they deal, at their most basic level, with matters of the soul.
From the spiritual to the physical, this book is an act of magic, an alchemical feat of turning spirit into matter. In the end, for both of us, making comics has always been a labor of love and an act of faith.
